What does cough feel like with pneumonia?

Cough is a very common presentation of Pneumonia and may be dry or bring up mucus with chest discomfort. You might feel soreness when coughing or taking a deep breath. Breathlessness, feverishness, chills, weakness, and faster breathing can occur alongside it. Older adults may seem unusually tired or confused rather than describing a strong cough.

Pneumonia inflames the tiny air sacs and surrounding lung tissue, which can make coughing and breathing uncomfortable. Mucus may be clear, yellow, green, or blood-streaked, but its appearance cannot determine the cause or severity alone. Pneumonia can be caused by different infections and may require examination, listening to the chest, or other tests.

Arrange medical advice for a new cough with fever, breathlessness, chest pain, or pronounced weakness. Rest, drink fluids if you can, and avoid smoking. Take prescribed treatment as directed and complete an antibiotic course if one is prescribed. Do not use leftover antibiotics, because the correct treatment depends on the cause.

Get emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, severe chest pain, or coughing up more than a small trace of blood. Seek prompt assessment if breathing is getting harder, fever persists, you cannot drink, or you are pregnant, older, or living with a significant long-term illness.
