What does cough feel like with asthma?

Asthma can narrow and irritate the airways, creating a dry, tight, or tickling cough. It may wake you at night, appear early in the morning, or flare after running, laughing, cold-air exposure, smoke, or strong scents. Wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath may accompany it, although cough can sometimes be the main symptom.

Symptoms may come and go, so feeling well between episodes does not rule out asthma. Cough can also come from infection, reflux, allergies, or medicines, which is why the pattern and breathing history matter.

Write down when the cough happens and what preceded it, including exercise, weather, dust, pets, smoke, or respiratory illness. Avoid smoke and strong irritants, and follow any prescribed asthma action plan. If you have a reliever inhaler, use it exactly as instructed; do not borrow another person’s inhaler. Arrange a review if symptoms are recurring or treatment is not controlling them.

Seek urgent help if breathing becomes difficult, speaking is hard, lips look blue or grey, you feel faint or confused, or prescribed reliever treatment is not helping. A rapidly worsening cough with chest tightness also needs prompt attention. Arrange routine assessment for night cough, exercise limitation, or repeated episodes.

Ask whether breathing tests are appropriate, what triggers to watch for, and how to use an inhaler with correct technique. Tell the clinician about night waking, wheeze, exercise symptoms, allergies, smoking exposure, previous attacks, and how often you need reliever medicine.
