What does constipation feel like with haemorrhoids?

Hard or dry stool may take effort to pass, while swollen haemorrhoids can cause itching, aching, tenderness or a feeling of fullness around the anus. Bright-red blood on toilet paper or on the outside of stool can occur, but bleeding has other possible causes too. Repeated straining and sitting on the toilet for a long time can irritate the area. Constipation is not a diagnosis of haemorrhoids by itself.

Drink fluids regularly, increase fibre slowly, and choose foods that help keep stool soft. Walk gently and go when you feel the urge rather than delaying. Avoid pushing hard or spending a long time on the toilet. A pharmacist can discuss a suitable stool-softening option and local comfort measures. If symptoms recur, a clinician can check the cause of pain or bleeding.

Arrange an appointment for ongoing pain, recurrent bleeding, a new lump, or constipation that does not improve. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, faintness, black stools, severe abdominal pain, vomiting, or inability to pass stool or gas.
