What does chest X-ray treat?

The images show structures in the chest, including the lungs, heart area, and bones. A clinician may request one when symptoms or examination findings raise concern about infection, changes in the lungs, or another chest problem. It may contribute to assessing Pneumonia, Bronchiectasis, Chronic Cough, or Tuberculosis, but an X-ray does not confirm every diagnosis and a normal image does not explain every symptom. The result is interpreted alongside your history, examination, and other tests.

Follow the instructions from the service arranging the scan. Tell the team if pregnancy is possible, and mention any difficulty standing or holding a position. After the image, ask who will explain the result and when to expect it. Treatment depends on the underlying finding: it may involve monitoring, medicines, additional imaging, laboratory tests, or referral. Do not wait for a routine scan if you have severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, coughing blood, or sudden heavy chest pressure.
