What does a bone density scan treat?

A bone density scan does not treat a condition; it measures bone strength and helps guide assessment for osteoporosis. The scan can identify reduced bone mineral density, support fracture-risk assessment and help a clinician decide whether prevention or treatment should be discussed. It is a diagnostic test, not a medicine or procedure that rebuilds bone during the appointment.

A DEXA scan uses low-dose X-rays to assess selected bones, commonly at the hip and spine. Results are interpreted with your age, sex, medical history, previous fractures and other risk factors. A low result may prompt advice about exercise, nutrition, fall prevention or medicines. The scan may also help monitor bone density when a clinician is already managing osteoporosis or another risk condition.

Tell the imaging team if you may be pregnant, recently had a contrast examination, or take supplements or medicines relevant to bone health. Wear clothing without bulky metal and follow the centre’s instructions. Afterward, ask how and when the result will be explained. Bring a list of fractures, family history, menstrual or hormonal history, and medicines to your appointment.

A scan itself is usually a planned assessment rather than urgent care. Seek prompt medical advice after a fall or injury that causes severe pain, inability to bear weight, a new deformity or sudden loss of movement. Arrange a review if you have repeated fractures, height loss or persistent back pain, because these can warrant evaluation of bone health.

Ask why the scan was recommended, which bones will be assessed, what the result means for your fracture risk, and whether another scan is needed later. Discuss osteoporosis, postmenopausal osteoporosis or premature ovarian insufficiency when relevant to your history.
