What causes throat cancer?

Some throat cancers are linked to persistent infection with certain types of human papillomavirus, or HPV. Other cancers are associated with repeated exposure to tobacco smoke, chewing tobacco, or heavy alcohol use. Using tobacco and alcohol together can expose throat cells to more than one source of injury. The cancer may begin in different parts of the throat, so the relevant risks and symptoms can vary.

Cells can acquire abnormal changes over time, but a person may develop throat cancer without a single clear cause. Having HPV, smoking, or drinking alcohol does not mean cancer will occur, and removing a risk factor cannot explain every existing symptom.

Arrange an examination for a persistent sore throat, hoarseness, painful swallowing, a neck lump, ear pain without an ear problem, or unexplained weight loss. A clinician may inspect the mouth and throat, feel the neck, and arrange specialist examination or imaging. Stopping tobacco, avoiding smoke, moderating alcohol, and discussing HPV prevention can reduce future harm, even though they cannot diagnose a current symptom.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing neck swelling, coughing blood, or a voice change with airway symptoms. Promptly arrange medical review for a throat symptom or neck lump that persists, worsens, or keeps returning. These signs do not prove cancer, but airway and swallowing problems need timely attention.

Ask which part of the throat may be involved, whether HPV testing or a specialist examination is appropriate, and whether a neck lump needs imaging or biopsy. Ask for practical support to stop tobacco and clarify which swallowing or breathing changes require emergency care.
