What causes foot pain?

Short answer
Foot pain can come from overuse, footwear pressure, altered foot shape, irritated fascia, joint stiffness, or nerve irritation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the location helps
Pain under the heel, especially with the first steps after rest, can occur with plantar fasciitis. A burning or tingling ache in the ball of the foot may be associated with Morton's Neuroma. A prominent joint at the base of the big toe suggests bunions, while a stiff, painful big-toe joint can occur with hallux rigidus. Curled or crowded toes may create pressure points in hammer toe. Flat Feet can change how load travels through the foot and may contribute to fatigue or aching.
Foot Pain can also follow a strain, blister, stress injury, or footwear that compresses a sensitive area. A focused examination considers walking pattern, skin, joints, tendons, and sensation.
Practical first steps
Temporarily reduce the activity that triggers pain and choose supportive footwear with enough room for the toes. Gentle movement is useful when it does not increase symptoms; avoid pushing through sharp pain. Rest, elevation, or a wrapped cool pack may help after activity when swelling is present. A clinician or physiotherapist can assess alignment and loading, and may recommend exercises, inserts, or other treatment. Surgery is considered only for selected causes that remain troublesome after appropriate non-surgical care.
When to seek care
Seek urgent assessment for severe pain after an injury, inability to bear weight, an open wound, spreading redness, fever, or a foot that becomes cold, pale, blue, or numb. Arrange a routine review when pain persists, keeps returning, changes your walking, or causes a visible lump or toe deformity.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which area is generating the pain, whether your footwear or walking pattern contributes, what activity is safe, and when imaging or specialist treatment should be considered.
