What can stop period cramps?

Short answer
Heat, anti-inflammatory pain relief and suitable hormonal contraception can ease or stop period cramps for many people.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why period cramps happen
Period cramps are caused by the womb tightening as it sheds its lining. The pain may spread to the lower back or thighs and can come with nausea, loose stools, headache or tiredness. Painful Periods describes this symptom pattern.
Pain that is severe, begins later in life, worsens over time or continues beyond the first days of bleeding can be linked with conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, ovarian endometrioma, pelvic inflammatory disease or uterine fibroids. A symptom does not by itself identify the cause.
Ways to ease the pain
Place a heat pad or hot-water bottle on the lower abdomen, use gentle movement if it feels comfortable, and rest when you need to. Anti-inflammatory medicines may work best when taken at the start of cramps or bleeding, if they are safe for you; follow the label and check with a pharmacist if you have stomach, kidney, bleeding or asthma concerns.
A clinician may discuss the Combined Pill or Hormonal Coil when cramps recur or interfere with daily life. These options are not suitable for everyone, so mention migraines, smoking, blood-clot history, medicines and pregnancy plans.
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice if pain stops you working or studying, does not respond to usual measures, appears between periods, happens with sex or bowel movements, or comes with unusually heavy bleeding. Seek urgent help for sudden severe pelvic pain, fainting, fever, vomiting that prevents fluids, or possible pregnancy with pain or bleeding.
Questions for your doctor
Could another condition explain the pattern of my cramps? Which pain medicines are safe with my health history? Would hormonal treatment suit my symptoms and pregnancy plans? What changes in bleeding or pain should prompt urgent review?
