What are the treatment options for hydrosalpinx?

A hydrosalpinx is a fallopian tube blocked and enlarged by fluid. The fluid can interfere with fertility and may affect an embryo moving toward or attaching in the uterus. A clinician considers pain, infection history, imaging findings, the condition of the other tube, previous operations and the intended fertility plan. Some people need treatment before fertility treatment; others may be monitored when pregnancy is not an immediate goal.

Laparoscopic surgery may remove the affected tube, called salpingectomy, or sometimes separate it from the uterus or close its connection. The procedure chosen depends on the tube and surrounding tissue. If both tubes are blocked or tubal function is unlikely to support conception, IVF places an embryo directly into the uterus and avoids travel through the tubes. Ask whether treatment should happen before an IVF cycle and how surgery may affect ovarian access or future planning.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for worsening pelvic pain, fever, vomiting, faintness or unusual vaginal discharge, because these can signal infection or another urgent pelvic problem. Seek urgent help for severe sudden pain, heavy bleeding or collapse. A positive pregnancy test with one-sided pain or bleeding also needs urgent assessment because a tubal pregnancy must be considered.
