What are the treatment options for genital herpes?

Genital herpes is caused by a virus that can remain in the body after sores settle. A GP consultation can assess blisters, ulcers, pain or burning and decide whether a swab or STI screening is appropriate.

Antiviral tablets may shorten an outbreak when started early. People with frequent or particularly troublesome recurrences may be offered suppressive treatment for a period. The choice depends on your health, pregnancy status, medicines and outbreak pattern.

Keep the area clean and dry, wear loose clothing and avoid sex while sores or warning symptoms are present. Wash hands after touching the area and do not share sex toys without cleaning and using a new condom. Condoms can reduce, but do not remove, transmission risk.

Take prescribed antivirals exactly as directed and do not use someone else’s medicine. Simple pain relief may help if suitable for you. Tell a clinician if you are pregnant, immunocompromised or unsure whether the sores are herpes.

Seek prompt medical advice for a first outbreak, severe pain, difficulty passing urine, spreading sores, fever, eye symptoms or symptoms during pregnancy. Urgent care is needed if you feel seriously unwell or cannot stay hydrated.
