What are the symptoms of uterine fibroids?

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in or around the muscle of the womb. Their symptoms depend on their number, location, and effect on the uterine cavity or nearby organs. Bleeding may be heavier, last longer, or include clots. Pressure can feel like pelvic heaviness, lower-back discomfort, persistent bloating, frequent urination, or constipation. Some fibroids are found during a fertility assessment, while others cause no symptoms.

Book a gynaecology appointment if bleeding is affecting work, sleep, or activities, or if pelvic pain, pressure, bladder, bowel, or fertility symptoms persist. The assessment may include a menstrual history, examination, blood tests for anaemia, and an ultrasound. Treatment depends on symptoms, fibroid location, age, and pregnancy plans; options can include medicines, a hormonal coil, operative hysteroscopy, myomectomy, or hysterectomy.

Seek urgent care for very heavy bleeding, faintness, marked weakness, severe or sudden pelvic pain, fever, or possible pregnancy with pain or bleeding. Ongoing heavy periods also deserve timely review because blood loss can lead to anaemia.
