What are the symptoms of scalp ringworm?

The infection may start as a scaly, itchy patch and spread outward. Hair can break close to the scalp, leaving short stubs or areas of uneven length. One or more round bald patches may develop, and the skin underneath can look dry, red, grey, or darker than surrounding skin. Some people have black dots where hairs have broken at the surface.

A more inflamed infection can produce pain, crusting, pus, or a soft swollen area. Flaking alone does not identify the cause: eczema, psoriasis, and other scalp conditions can also shed scale. Scalp ringworm is contagious and can pass through close contact or shared combs, hats, pillows, and towels.

Arrange medical assessment rather than relying on scalp creams alone, because infection inside the hair shaft often needs oral antifungal treatment. A clinician may also recommend medicated shampoo therapy to reduce spread while treatment starts. Do not share hair tools, hats, towels, or bedding, and clean or replace items as advised. Avoid scratching and do not shave the affected area unless a clinician recommends it.

Seek prompt care for painful swelling, pus, extensive crusting, fever, rapidly enlarging bald patches, or marked tenderness. Early assessment matters when hair is breaking or falling out because severe inflammation can injure the follicles. Children, close household contacts, and pets may also need evaluation if exposure is possible.
