What are the first signs of throat cancer?

Many throat symptoms come from infections, reflux, allergies, voice strain, or other non-cancer causes. A symptom that persists, keeps returning, or progressively changes needs a clinical assessment. The location of a throat tumour affects which symptom appears: voice changes may involve the larynx, while swallowing problems can reflect narrowing or irritation in the throat.

HPV infection is one factor associated with some throat cancers, but having HPV does not by itself establish a cancer diagnosis. A clinician may examine the mouth and throat and arrange imaging or a tissue sample.

Book an appointment if hoarseness or swallowing difficulty continues, especially if it affects eating, drinking, or speaking. Note the start date, pain, voice changes, smoking or vaping exposure, reflux symptoms, and any neck swelling. If cancer is confirmed, treatment may include radiotherapy, tumour removal surgery, chemotherapy, or a combination chosen for the tumour’s site and stage.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing neck swelling, coughing or vomiting blood, or severe dehydration. These symptoms can signal an airway or swallowing emergency and should be assessed promptly.

Ask which part of the throat may be involved, whether you need an ear-nose-and-throat examination, and which tests can distinguish irritation from a tumour. Ask what symptoms should trigger same-day care while you wait for testing.
