What are the first signs of ovarian cysts?

An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac or other growth on an ovary. A small or uncomplicated cyst may be found during an examination or scan without causing symptoms. When it presses on nearby tissues, you may notice a dull ache low in the abdomen, pelvic fullness, or pain that is more noticeable on one side. Bloating, urinary pressure, altered periods, or pain with intercourse can also occur. Ovulation pain has a different pattern but can overlap with cyst symptoms.

Record when the pain, bloating, or bleeding occurs and whether it follows your cycle. Arrange a gynaecology assessment if symptoms persist, recur, or interfere with daily activities. A clinician may ask about pregnancy possibility, examine you, and recommend a transvaginal ultrasound. Do not start or stop hormonal treatment without advice; management depends on the cyst’s appearance, size, symptoms, and whether it changes over time.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden severe pelvic pain, pain with vomiting, faintness, marked weakness, fever, or heavy vaginal bleeding. These symptoms can signal a complication such as twisting or rupture and need prompt assessment. Persistent pelvic pain or bloating also deserves review, even when it is not severe.
