What are the first signs of meningitis?

Meningitis is inflammation around the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms may develop quickly, and not everyone has every symptom. A stiff neck, confusion, unusual sleepiness, a rash that does not fade when pressed, or a seizure can also occur. In babies, poor feeding, irritability, a high-pitched cry, or a bulging soft spot may be concerning. A rash may be absent, so do not wait for one before seeking help.

Treat a possible meningitis illness as urgent. Arrange immediate medical assessment rather than watching symptoms at home, particularly when fever is accompanied by headache, neck stiffness, vomiting, confusion, or marked drowsiness. Do not drive yourself if you feel confused, faint, or very unwell. Tell the clinician when symptoms began, whether they are worsening, and whether there has been close contact with someone diagnosed with meningitis.

Call emergency services immediately for a seizure, difficulty waking, confusion, breathing difficulty, collapse, rapidly worsening illness, or a rash that does not fade under pressure. Severe headache with fever, repeated vomiting, or light sensitivity also needs urgent assessment. Meningitis can progress rapidly, and early symptoms can resemble other infections, so a healthcare professional must assess the pattern rather than relying on one sign.

Ask what examinations are needed, whether testing or hospital observation is appropriate, and which changes should prompt emergency help. You can also ask whether close contacts need advice about prevention or vaccination.
