What Are the First Signs of Gout?

Gout is an inflammatory joint condition linked to urate crystal deposits. An attack may begin quickly, sometimes waking someone from sleep, and the joint can feel hot, swollen, and painful even with light contact. Toe pain is common, but gout can affect the ankle, knee, or another joint. A first episode can resemble an infection or another form of arthritis, so symptoms alone cannot confirm gout.

Rest the affected joint, keep it elevated if comfortable, and avoid pressure from tight footwear. Arrange a GP Consultation, especially if this is the first episode or symptoms are severe. A Blood Test may form part of the assessment, while Joint Aspiration can help distinguish crystals from infection in selected cases. Anti-Inflammatory Medication should be chosen with a clinician, particularly if kidney disease or other health conditions are present.

Seek urgent medical advice for a hot swollen joint with fever, chills, feeling very unwell, or rapidly spreading redness, because infection requires prompt treatment. Arrange review if attacks recur, several joints become involved, or pain does not settle. Chronic Kidney Disease and other health factors can affect risk and medication choices.
