What are the alternatives to transvaginal ultrasound?

An abdominal ultrasound scans through the lower abdomen and may give useful information about the uterus, ovaries and pregnancy. It usually needs a comfortably full bladder and may provide less close detail than an internal scan. MRI uses magnetic images to assess pelvic organs without an ultrasound probe, but it is not used for every question and may take longer.

A physical examination, urine or blood tests, or a repeat scan may answer part of the question. Diagnostic hysteroscopy looks inside the womb with a small camera and is used for selected uterine concerns; it is a procedure rather than a simple scan. In early pregnancy, imaging choices are guided by the need to locate the pregnancy and assess urgent problems.

Tell the imaging team why you cannot or do not want an internal scan, whether you may be pregnant, and whether a full bladder is difficult for you. Ask what the proposed alternative can and cannot assess. Do not delay an urgent assessment without discussing it, particularly when pain or bleeding could relate to an ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage.

Seek urgent help for severe or one-sided pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, marked dizziness, or pain at the tip of the shoulder during possible pregnancy. These symptoms need timely assessment even if you are worried about the type of scan. Sudden severe pain with vomiting also needs urgent review.
