What Are the Alternatives to Surgical Excision?

A procedure is chosen according to the lesion’s appearance, depth, location, symptoms, and need for laboratory diagnosis. A superficial lesion may sometimes be managed with shave removal or a destructive method, while a deeper or suspicious lesion may require tissue that preserves the edges for examination. Mohs surgery removes skin cancer in stages while checking margins during the procedure and may be considered in selected cases. A mole, neurofibroma, xanthelasma, or suspected skin cancer does not automatically call for the same technique. Observation is only suitable after a clinician has assessed the lesion and explained what changes to monitor.

Do not remove or burn a changing pigmented lesion at home. Arrange a dermatology assessment and mention growth, bleeding, crusting, colour variation, pain, itching, or repeated trauma from clothing. Bring older photographs if available. Ask whether a sample is needed before treatment, whether the whole lesion should be removed, and how the result will affect follow-up. Cosmetic goals matter, but they should not override diagnostic safety.

Book a prompt skin assessment for a mole or lesion that changes in size, shape, colour, or sensation, or one that repeatedly bleeds or fails to heal. Seek urgent care for uncontrolled bleeding, rapidly spreading redness after a procedure, fever, severe pain, or facial swelling with breathing difficulty.

Does this lesion need a biopsy or complete removal? Which method gives the clearest diagnosis? Would Mohs surgery be relevant? What scar, wound-care, and follow-up considerations apply to its location?
