What are the alternatives to cone biopsy?

Colposcopy is an examination that magnifies the cervix and may guide a small biopsy. It can help identify cervical dysplasia, but a limited sample may not be enough when a larger or deeper area needs assessment.

Loop excision removes abnormal cervical tissue with a thin heated wire. It can both provide tissue for laboratory examination and treat some abnormalities. Cone biopsy removes a cone-shaped piece and may be chosen when the abnormal area extends into the canal or a more complete specimen is needed.

Your clinician will consider the screening and biopsy results, visibility of the abnormal area, suspected cervical cancer, previous treatment, and pregnancy plans. Ask whether observation with repeat assessment is reasonable, or whether tissue removal is needed to clarify the diagnosis or prevent progression.

Contact your clinic for bleeding after sex, unusual discharge, or bleeding between periods so the cervix can be assessed. After a procedure, seek prompt help for heavy bleeding, fever, severe pain, or foul-smelling discharge. These symptoms need assessment and do not establish a cancer diagnosis.

Ask why cone biopsy was suggested, whether colposcopy or loop excision would answer the same question, how much tissue may be removed, and how the plan relates to a future pregnancy.
