What should you know about ways to prevent miscarriage?

Short answer
Many miscarriages cannot be prevented, but early pregnancy care can identify health problems and support safer choices for you and your pregnancy.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Key reassurance
- A miscarriage is often not caused by anything you did.
- Assessment
- Bleeding and pain in pregnancy deserve individual medical advice.
What prevention can and cannot do
Many early miscarriages happen because an embryo does not develop normally, and everyday activities do not usually cause them. No routine action can prevent every miscarriage. You can support your health by arranging pregnancy care, managing medical conditions, avoiding alcohol and smoking, and taking medicines only after checking they are suitable.
Understanding risk and symptoms
Bleeding or cramping in pregnancy does not by itself confirm a miscarriage. It may have other explanations, but it needs appropriate assessment. A clinician may ask about pain, bleeding, pregnancy dates, previous pregnancies, and medical conditions. A transvaginal ultrasound can help assess the pregnancy and womb when clinically appropriate; blood tests may also be used.
A previous miscarriage is not proof that another will happen. Emotional support matters, and grief after pregnancy loss is valid regardless of how early the loss occurred.
Steps during pregnancy
Book antenatal care and tell the team about diabetes, thyroid disease, clotting problems, medicines, or previous pregnancy complications. Take recommended supplements, eat regularly, stay hydrated, and follow advice about infections and vaccinations. Do not stop prescribed treatment without guidance. If a miscarriage is confirmed, medical management or surgical management of miscarriage may be discussed according to your symptoms, examination, and preference.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, faintness, dizziness, fever, or feeling suddenly very unwell. These symptoms can signal a complication, including ectopic pregnancy, and should not wait for a routine appointment. Contact your maternity or gynaecology team for any pregnancy bleeding that worries you.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Which medicines and supplements are suitable for me? Do I need an ultrasound or blood tests? Could an existing condition affect this pregnancy? What warning signs should send me to urgent care? If loss is confirmed, what management choices are available?
