What should you know about a vomiting bug?

Gastroenteritis can inflame the stomach and bowel, often bringing nausea, vomiting, loose stools, cramps and sometimes fever. Food poisoning can begin after contaminated food or drink. Rotavirus infection is another possible cause, especially in young children. Vomiting can also occur with migraine, gallstones or pancreatitis, so the surrounding symptoms matter.

Take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. If vomiting settles, try plain foods such as rice, toast, soup or bananas, and avoid alcohol and rich meals for a while. Rest, wash hands with soap and water, and avoid preparing food for other people while you are unwell. Do not give children or adults anti-vomiting medicine unless a clinician or pharmacist says it is suitable.

Seek urgent medical help for blood or coffee-ground material in vomit, severe or worsening abdominal pain, a stiff neck, confusion, fainting, trouble breathing, or inability to keep fluids down. Get medical advice for signs of dehydration such as very little urine, a dry mouth, marked weakness or dizziness. Babies, older adults, pregnant people and those with significant medical conditions may need advice sooner.

Ask what may be causing the vomiting, how much fluid to take, whether any regular medicines need adjustment, and which symptoms should prompt same-day review.
