Vitamin D panel test: what it includes

The core test for vitamin D status is usually 25-hydroxyvitamin D, written as 25(OH)D. A clinician may request calcium, phosphate, parathyroid hormone, kidney function or other blood tests when looking at bone health or mineral balance. These tests answer different questions, so a panel label should not be assumed to mean every vitamin D form was measured.

The reason for testing matters. Symptoms such as bone discomfort or muscle weakness can have several causes, including vitamin D deficiency or fibromyalgia, and a result needs clinical interpretation rather than a diagnosis based on the label alone.

Check which markers are included, whether preparation is needed, and when the report will be reviewed. Tell the clinician about supplements, kidney problems, digestive conditions and pregnancy. Follow the recommended plan if vitamin D supplementation is prescribed. Avoid taking additional products or combining preparations without checking the total amount with a pharmacist or clinician.

Arrange medical review for persistent bone pain, worsening muscle weakness, repeated falls or symptoms that limit daily activities. Seek emergency help for collapse, severe confusion, chest pain, difficulty breathing or inability to keep fluids down. These symptoms need assessment regardless of a vitamin D panel result.
