Vitamin D and cancer: what should you know?

Vitamin D helps the body handle calcium and maintain bones. Levels can be affected by limited sun exposure, diet, absorption problems, kidney or liver conditions, and some medicines. A low level may need correction for general health, but it does not by itself diagnose cancer or show how a tumour will behave.

Cancer care is chosen from the cancer type, its extent, test results, and your overall health. Vitamin D supplements cannot replace breast cancer assessment, imaging, biopsy, or treatment. A mammogram, breast MRI, or breast biopsy may be used when a breast change needs investigation.

Tell your clinician about supplements, fortified foods, and medicines before starting a high-dose product. They may decide whether a blood test is useful and which dose fits your needs. Taking more than advised can cause problems such as excess calcium, nausea, thirst, or kidney strain.

Keep scheduled cancer screening and appointments. If you are being treated for Breast Cancer, ask whether your bone health needs attention, particularly when treatment may affect bones or movement. Do not change prescribed cancer treatment because of an online claim about vitamins.

Arrange medical advice for a new breast lump, nipple change, skin change, unexplained discharge, or a persistent focal breast symptom. These findings have many possible explanations, so an assessment is needed rather than guessing the cause.

Seek urgent help for severe weakness, confusion, repeated vomiting, marked thirst with frequent urination, or chest pain after taking a supplement. These symptoms can signal a serious problem and should not be managed by taking another dose.

Ask: Do I need a vitamin D test? What dose is appropriate for me? Could my medicines or kidney health affect supplementation? If I have a breast concern, which examination or imaging is appropriate? How will vitamin D fit alongside my cancer care plan?
