What should you know about viral pneumonia vaccine?

Viral pneumonia has several possible causes. Vaccination is designed for a particular virus, so protection depends on which vaccine is available and which infection it targets. Influenza and COVID-19 vaccines are examples of virus-specific prevention; they cannot prevent every cause of pneumonia. Vaccination also does not treat pneumonia that is already present.

Ask a clinician or vaccination service which vaccines are recommended for your age, pregnancy status, medical conditions, work and travel plans. Keep your vaccine record available and mention previous reactions or medicines that affect immunity. Hand hygiene, ventilation and staying home when unwell can add protection, but they do not replace personalised vaccine advice.

A vaccine does not rule out infection. Contact a clinician for fever, chills, worsening cough, chest discomfort or breathlessness after exposure or illness. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, confusion, collapse or blue or grey lips. Prompt care matters because pneumonia can become more serious even when someone has been vaccinated.

Ask which virus-specific vaccines apply to you, whether timing should change because you are ill or immunocompromised, and what side effects need attention. Ask whether you need separate protection against influenza or COVID-19 rather than a general pneumonia vaccine.
