Viral conjunctivitis with a cold: what should you know?

The same viral illness can irritate the nose, throat and eye surface. Alongside a runny or blocked nose, cough or sore throat, the eyes may become red, watery, gritty or mildly sticky. One eye can become affected before the other. Tears and eye discharge carry virus to hands and objects, while coughs and sneezes spread respiratory droplets. Allergies and bacterial conjunctivitis can resemble this pattern, so worsening or unusual eye symptoms need a clinical opinion.

Wash hands frequently, especially after blowing the nose or cleaning the eyes. Use separate towels and pillowcases, avoid rubbing, and clean discharge with a fresh damp pad for each eye. Rest and drink regularly for the cold. Cool compresses can ease eye irritation. Avoid contact lenses and eye makeup until symptoms have cleared and professional advice supports restarting them. Do not share drops or use antibiotics left from an earlier illness.

Seek prompt assessment for eye pain, strong light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, significant swelling, injury, or symptoms in someone who wears contact lenses. Get urgent help for sudden vision loss or severe pain. Arrange a GP consultation if symptoms are not improving, discharge becomes heavy, or the cold is accompanied by breathing difficulty, dehydration or marked weakness.
