What should you know about a vertical MRI scanner?

MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create images; it does not use ionising radiation. In a vertical design, the scanner may image you while sitting, standing, or in another supported position. The available position and body area depend on the equipment and the imaging centre.

The images can help clinicians assess soft tissues and guide further investigation. Some examinations use an injection of contrast. The radiographer will explain the sequence, protect your privacy, and give you a way to communicate during the scan.

Tell the imaging team about pacemakers, implants, metal fragments, clips, hearing devices, medication pumps, or previous operations. Remove metal objects and follow instructions about food, drink, medicines, and contrast. Mention pregnancy, kidney problems, allergies, or difficulty staying still.

Wear comfortable clothing without metal fasteners when advised. The scanner makes knocking or buzzing sounds, so hearing protection is provided. Staying still improves image quality; ask about support or an alternative plan if a position is painful.

Tell staff immediately if you feel trapped, distressed, dizzy, or unwell during the scan. After contrast, seek prompt help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, widespread rash, or fainting. Contact your clinical team about new or worsening symptoms rather than waiting for an imaging report.
