Short answer

Vergetures, or stretch marks, are common lines formed when skin stretches faster than its supporting tissues can adapt; their colour and texture may change over time.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What stretch marks mean

They may begin as pink, red, purple, or darker lines and later become lighter, slightly indented, and less noticeable. They often appear on the abdomen, breasts, hips, thighs, buttocks, upper arms, or back. Growth, pregnancy, rapid weight change, muscle gain, and some medicines that affect skin structure can contribute. Stretch marks are not contagious and are not caused by poor hygiene. A clinician can distinguish them from other linear rashes or changes in pigmentation when the appearance is unusual.

Options for managing them

Moisturiser can reduce dryness and tightness, but it cannot reliably remove established marks. Protect exposed skin from ultraviolet light so colour differences do not become more noticeable. If you want treatment, a dermatologist may discuss Microneedling, Fractional Laser Treatment, RF Microneedling, or Carboxytherapy. The choice depends on whether marks are newer or older, their colour, their depth, your skin tone, and pregnancy or breastfeeding status. Improvement usually requires a planned course and realistic expectations; treatment can change texture and contrast without restoring untouched skin.

When to arrange a review

Seek a medical review if marks appear suddenly without a clear period of stretching, cover extensive areas, or occur with easy bruising, muscle weakness, facial changes, or other new symptoms. Arrange assessment if a line becomes painful, swollen, crusted, or persistently itchy. A clinician should also review marks that began after a prescribed or strong steroid medicine, because the medicine may need supervision rather than abrupt stopping.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which changes are realistic for your mark colour and skin tone, how many appointments may be needed, what recovery looks like, and which side effects require a call. Ask whether pregnancy, breastfeeding, active eczema, a tendency to form raised scars, or current medicines changes the plan.

Questions people ask

Can stretch marks be prevented completely?

No method prevents every stretch mark. Gentle skin care and steady changes where medically appropriate may support comfort, but body changes can still produce them.

Do stretch marks need treatment?

They are usually a cosmetic concern rather than a health danger. Treatment is optional, and a dermatologist can help match an approach to their age, colour, and texture.
