VE spirometry: what the breathing test means

Short answer

VE spirometry is a breathing test that measures how much air you can move and how quickly, helping clinicians assess airflow problems.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the measurements can show

During the test, you breathe into a spirometer through a mouthpiece. You usually take a deep breath and blow out as hard and as long as you can, with coached attempts repeated to obtain reliable readings. A clinician may repeat the test after an inhaled medicine to see whether airflow changes.

The pattern can support assessment of asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, or persistent cough, but spirometry is interpreted with symptoms, examination, smoking history, and other tests. A result outside the expected range does not identify one condition on its own, and a normal result does not explain every breathing complaint.

Preparing for and following up

Wear comfortable clothing and follow the clinic's instructions about meals, smoking, exercise, and inhalers before testing. Tell the clinician if you have recently had chest pain, an infection, surgery, or difficulty breathing, because the appointment may need adjusting.

Bring your inhalers and a list of medicines. Ask when you will receive the interpretation and whether you need repeat testing or another assessment. If smoking contributes to your symptoms, support such as a Smoking Cessation Programme may help; prescribed Inhaler Therapy should be used exactly as directed.

When breathing symptoms need urgent help

Seek urgent medical care for severe breathlessness at rest, blue or grey lips, fainting, new confusion, chest pain, or inability to speak in full sentences. After testing, contact the clinic if breathing remains markedly worse or you develop wheezing that does not settle with your prescribed plan.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what each measurement means, whether your result suggests obstruction or restriction, and whether medicine was used during the test. Clarify which inhalers to pause before future testing, when to repeat the assessment, and what symptoms should trigger urgent help.

Questions people ask

Is spirometry the same as a chest scan?

No. Spirometry measures breathing performance; imaging tests create pictures of the lungs and chest.

Can I use my inhaler before spirometry?

Follow the clinic's specific instructions, because some inhalers can affect the readings.
