What should you know about vasculitis headache?

Vasculitis means inflammation of blood-vessel walls. If vessels supplying the head or nearby tissues are involved, headache can occur, but headache alone cannot show that vasculitis is present. Doctors consider the pattern, age at onset, speed of development, examination findings, and symptoms affecting other organs.

Common conditions such as allergic rhinitis, chronic sinusitis, a common cold, COVID-19, dehydration, dengue fever, generalised anxiety disorder, or heat exhaustion can also cause or accompany headache. A headache is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and the direction matters: a vasculitis condition may present with headache, while most headaches do not indicate vasculitis.

Arrange prompt clinical review for a new persistent headache, a pattern that is changing, or pain with fever, weight loss, scalp tenderness, jaw pain while chewing, visual symptoms, rash, joint pain, weakness, or numbness. Note when it began, where it is located, how quickly it reached its worst point, associated symptoms, recent infections, heat exposure, fluid intake, and medicines.

A clinician may examine your nerves, eyes, scalp, blood pressure, and other systems, then decide whether blood tests, imaging, or specialist review is appropriate. Do not start steroid treatment without medical supervision, because it can mask infection and has important risks.

Call emergency services for a sudden severe headache, new weakness or numbness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, loss of vision, collapse, seizure, severe confusion, or a stiff neck with fever. Seek urgent same-day care for a new headache with visual change, jaw pain, scalp tenderness, high fever, or marked illness. These warning signs require examination rather than self-diagnosis.

Ask which features make inflammation more or less likely, whether your eyes and nerves need checking, what tests could clarify the cause, and which symptoms should trigger emergency help. If you have recently had a fever, infection, dehydration, heat exposure, or new medicine, mention it specifically.
