Varicella pneumonia X-ray: what it can show

Varicella pneumonia is a lung complication of chickenpox. A chest X-ray may show hazy or patchy areas in both lungs, although appearances can vary and an early image may not answer every question. The image cannot by itself prove that varicella caused the changes. Clinicians consider the timing of the chickenpox rash, breathing symptoms, oxygen level, temperature and other possible infections such as influenza or COVID-19. Follow the clinician's plan for monitoring and treatment, and mention any worsening cough, chest discomfort, breathlessness, [Fever](/symptoms/fever/) or [Coughing Up Phlegm](/symptoms/coughing-up-phlegm/). Rest, drink fluids if you can, and avoid smoking or vaping while unwell. Do not interpret the film alone or start leftover antibiotics. Tell the team about pregnancy, immune problems, regular medicines and recent exposure to chickenpox. A clinician may compare the X-ray with your examination and arrange repeat assessment if your breathing does not improve.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly increasing breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, inability to speak in full sentences, or chest pain with breathing. Emergency assessment is also needed if you are becoming unusually drowsy, cannot keep fluids down, or have signs of [Sepsis](/conditions/sepsis/), such as a very fast deterioration with clammy skin or marked weakness. [Chills](/symptoms/chills/) or [Cough](/symptoms/cough/) alone do not establish the cause, but they should be reported when they occur with a chickenpox illness.

Ask what changes are visible, whether the pattern fits your symptoms, whether oxygen monitoring or another test is needed, and which warning signs should prompt a return. Ask when you can safely resume normal activity and how to reduce spread to people who have not had chickenpox vaccination.
