Varicella in English: what the term means

The illness often starts with feeling unwell or fever, followed by spots that can become fluid-filled blisters and then crust. The rash may appear in crops, so new spots can arrive while earlier ones are changing. Scratching can damage the skin and allow bacterial infection.

After chickenpox, the virus can remain inactive in nerve tissue and later reactivate as shingles. Chickenpox and shingles are related but are not the same illness. A person with an active chickenpox rash can pass the virus to someone who lacks immunity.

If you think you have varicella, limit close contact, especially with pregnant people, newborns, and anyone with a weakened immune system. Keep the rash clean, avoid scratching, and ask a GP Consultation clinician about symptom relief and whether Antiviral Treatment is suitable.

Check whether you have received Chickenpox Vaccination or had the illness before. Do not share towels or personal items, and follow local clinical advice about returning to school or work.

Arrange prompt medical review for breathing problems, severe headache, confusion, dehydration, a rash near the eye, or skin that becomes increasingly red, painful, or warm. Seek advice promptly if the person is pregnant, very young, or immunocompromised.
