What should you know about var rabies?

Short answer
Rabies is a serious infection spread through the saliva of infected mammals, so urgent assessment after a possible exposure matters.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Spread
- Saliva from an infected mammal entering broken skin or a mucous membrane
- First action
- Wash the wound promptly with soap and running water
- Care timing
- Seek urgent assessment after a possible exposure, before symptoms appear
What rabies means
Rabies affects the nervous system. It can spread when saliva from an infected animal enters a bite, scratch, open wound, or the eyes, mouth, or nose. Bats, dogs, foxes, and other mammals can carry the virus; the risk depends on the animal, the contact, and local health guidance. Touching an animal or being near it without contact with saliva is not the same as an exposure.
Early symptoms can resemble a general illness, with fever, weakness, headache, or unusual sensations near an old wound. As the infection progresses, confusion, agitation, difficulty swallowing, fear or difficulty around drinking, weakness, and breathing problems may occur. Once symptoms develop, rabies is extremely serious, which is why prevention after exposure should not wait for symptoms.
What to do after possible exposure
Move away from the animal safely and wash a bite or scratch immediately with plenty of soap and running water. If available, an appropriate antiseptic can be used after washing. Do not seal a wound tightly or try to catch an animal yourself. Contact urgent medical care or a public health service promptly, even when the wound looks small, the animal has left, or the exposure happened some time ago.
A clinician will assess the animal and the type of contact, then decide whether post-exposure treatment is needed. This may include rabies vaccine and, for some exposures, rabies immunoglobulin placed around the wound. Tell the clinician when and where the contact happened, which animal was involved, whether saliva touched broken skin or the face, and whether you have received rabies vaccine before.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical advice after any bite or scratch from a mammal that could carry rabies, or when saliva may have reached broken skin, the eyes, or the mouth. Do this even if there is no bleeding and even if the animal appeared healthy. A bat found in a room with a sleeping person, child, or someone unable to describe contact also needs prompt advice.
Go to emergency care immediately for trouble swallowing, confusion, marked agitation, new weakness, breathing difficulty, or rapidly worsening illness after a possible exposure. Do not wait for these symptoms before seeking preventive treatment; they are warning signs of a medical emergency.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the contact counts as a rabies exposure, which treatment is recommended for the wound, and when each follow-up dose or review is due. You can also ask whether you need protection against tetanus or treatment for a bacterial wound infection.

Questions people ask
Can I wait to see whether symptoms develop?
No. Contact urgent medical care after a possible exposure because preventive treatment works before illness develops; waiting for symptoms can remove that opportunity.
Does every animal bite cause rabies?
No. Risk depends on the animal, its health and behaviour, the location of the exposure, and whether saliva entered broken skin or a mucous membrane. A clinician or public health professional should assess the contact.
How can rabies be prevented?
Avoid contact with unfamiliar mammals, keep pets protected according to veterinary advice, and ask about vaccination if your work or travel could involve rabies exposure.
