Vaginal itch after giving birth: what to know

The vulval tissues may feel sore or itchy while stitches, small tears, or swelling heal. Pads, moisture, sweat, antiseptic products, soaps, and fragranced wipes can irritate the skin. Hormonal changes, especially while breastfeeding, may reduce moisture and contribute to dryness. Thrush can cause intense itch with soreness or changed discharge, while Lichen Sclerosus can cause persistent itch and pale or fragile skin.

The appearance and associated symptoms matter. Itching inside the vagina, itching mainly on the vulva, burning when urine touches the skin, and unusual discharge may suggest different problems.

Rinse gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, change damp pads often, and wear loose breathable underwear. Avoid douching, scented washes, deodorants, and scratching. Do not insert products or use leftover prescription creams without advice, particularly if you are breastfeeding or have stitches.

Contact your maternity team, GP, or gynaecology clinician if itch persists, returns, or comes with discharge, odour, pain, or visible skin change. They can examine the area and recommend antifungal treatment for thrush or topical steroid treatment for vulval skin when appropriate.

Seek prompt advice for increasing redness or swelling, worsening wound pain, pus, foul-smelling discharge, fever, or difficulty passing urine. Urgent care is needed for severe pain, heavy bleeding, faintness, or feeling acutely unwell.

Ask whether the itch is from healing, contact irritation, thrush, or a skin condition; whether stitches or wounds look healthy; and which treatment is safe during breastfeeding. Mention any new products, discharge, odour, urinary burning, or skin whitening.
