What should you know about UTI and bladder cancer?

Burning urination, urgency, frequent urination, pelvic discomfort, and blood in the urine can occur with infection or other conditions. Bladder cancer may present with blood in the urine, sometimes without pain, and can also cause altered urinary flow. A UTI symptom does not mean a person has bladder cancer. Testing may include urine analysis and culture; if concern remains, cystoscopy allows the clinician to inspect the bladder lining and take a sample when needed.

Arrange review when urinary symptoms return, do not settle after treatment, or occur with visible blood in the urine. Take antibiotics exactly as prescribed if they are advised, and report ongoing symptoms rather than repeating leftover medicine. Keep a note of urine colour, pain, fever, urgency, and difficulty passing urine. If bladder cancer is diagnosed, options can include intravesical BCG therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or bladder removal surgery, depending on the tumour and overall health.

Get urgent help for inability to pass urine, heavy blood or clots in the urine, severe side or back pain, fever with shaking chills, vomiting, confusion, or feeling faint. Difficulty passing urine can become an emergency because the bladder may not empty properly. Prompt care is needed even when an infection seems possible.

Ask whether urine testing is needed, how a recurrent infection will be evaluated, whether cystoscopy is appropriate, what explains blood in the urine, and how treatment choices would change if a bladder tumour were found.
