Using Skinoren and Differin together: what to know

Skinoren is a brand name commonly used for azelaic acid, while Differin contains adapalene, a topical retinoid. They work differently, but each can cause stinging, dryness, redness, peeling, or increased sensitivity when introduced. Irritation is more likely when both are applied at once, used too often, or spread over already inflamed skin.

A clinician may recommend one product first, alternate evenings, or use different areas, depending on whether the goal is acne, blocked pores, post-acne marks, or another concern. A moisturiser can support the skin barrier, and daytime sun protection helps limit worsening discolouration.

Confirm the strength, amount, and order with the prescriber or pharmacist. Apply a thin layer to clean, fully dry skin and keep both products away from the eyes, lips, nostrils, and broken skin. Introduce changes gradually rather than adding both on the same evening. Use gentle cleansing, avoid scrubs and other irritating acne products unless advised, and moisturise when the skin feels tight.

If burning, swelling, cracking, or marked peeling develops, pause the suspected irritant and seek personalised advice. Do not apply extra product to compensate for missed nights; more product does not make treatment work faster.

Arrange medical advice for persistent burning, painful cracks, significant swelling, blistering, or a rash that extends beyond the application sites. Urgent help is needed for facial swelling with breathing or swallowing difficulty. Tell your clinician if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, breastfeeding, or taking medicines that make skin more sensitive before using adapalene.
