What should you know about the US childhood vaccine schedule?

The schedule groups vaccines around childhood stages because protection is needed at different points in development. Some vaccines require more than one dose, and some are combined to reduce the number of injections. A child’s medical conditions, previous reactions, travel plans and earlier records can change the discussion.

An inactivated vaccine uses a non-living form or part of a germ. A live attenuated vaccine uses a weakened form and may not be suitable for some children with specific immune conditions. These categories are not a substitute for an individual review; the clinician checks the product, timing and the child’s health.

Bring the child’s immunisation record to every appointment, including records from another country or school. If a dose was missed, contact the child’s clinician rather than restarting the whole schedule yourself. A catch-up plan can use documented doses and the minimum interval between doses.

Tell the vaccinator about allergies, immune problems, current illness and any previous vaccine reaction. Mild soreness or a brief fever can occur after vaccination; ask how to comfort your child and which symptoms need review. Keep the next appointment visible in your calendar.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, collapse, unusual limpness, or a seizure after vaccination. Contact the clinician promptly for a persistent high fever, a rapidly worsening reaction, or any symptom that concerns you. Vaccine questions are best answered using the child’s product and health history.

Ask: Which vaccines are due now? Does my child need catch-up doses? Is any vaccine unsuitable because of a medical condition or previous reaction? Which records count as valid documentation? What reactions are expected, and who should we contact after the appointment? When is the next dose due?
