White blood cells can accompany inflammation or infection, while red blood cells may reflect bleeding somewhere in the urinary tract or sample contamination. Bacteria need to be interpreted with symptoms and sample quality. Crystals can form in concentrated urine and do not always represent a stone. Casts are structures formed in kidney tubules; some patterns provide clues about kidney involvement. The report is considered with dipstick findings, examination, and sometimes culture or blood tests.

Collect the sample exactly as instructed, usually after cleaning the area and collecting the midstream portion. Tell the clinician about menstruation, recent exercise, fever, urinary medicines, and antibiotics. If the result is unclear or does not match your symptoms, a fresh sample, culture, imaging, or kidney-function testing may be requested. Do not treat bacteria seen on a report without clinical advice.

Get prompt medical advice for fever, chills, side or back pain, vomiting, visible blood, or difficulty passing urine. Urgent help is needed for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, or rapidly worsening pain. Recurrent abnormal results, swelling, or a persistent change in urine also deserve follow-up.

Ask which cells or structures were found, whether contamination is possible, and whether culture or blood tests are needed. Ask what the result means alongside your symptoms, whether repeat collection is advisable, and which changes should prompt urgent review.
