Why urine may look cloudy after sitting

A fresh sample may look clearer than one left standing. Cooling can make dissolved salts form visible crystals, while normal mucus or cells may settle at the bottom. This does not by itself show that you have an infection. Cloudiness that is already present when urine is passed, keeps returning, or is paired with burning, urgency, frequent trips, or lower abdominal pain is more useful clinically. If you are checking a sample, note how it looks when fresh and whether the change appears only after standing. Use a clean container and follow any collection instructions from your clinic. Drink fluids according to your usual needs unless you have been told to restrict them. Avoid interpreting a stored sample as a diagnosis. If cloudiness is present in fresh urine or continues over several occasions, arrange a medical review and ask whether testing is appropriate. Arrange prompt care for fever, chills, side or back pain, nausea, vomiting, or feeling significantly unwell. Seek urgent help for trouble passing urine, severe pain, or inability to keep fluids down.
