What should you know about a urine dipstick test?

Short answer

A urine dipstick test quickly checks several urine features and helps a clinician decide whether further testing is needed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What is a urine dipstick test?

A treated strip is placed in a fresh urine sample. Colour changes can provide clues about blood, protein, glucose, ketones, acidity, concentration and substances linked with inflammation or infection. The test is a screening tool, so a colour change does not by itself establish a diagnosis.

What the result can mean

A result may be normal, abnormal, or difficult to interpret because of medicines, food, hydration, menstruation, contamination or a sample that was not collected correctly. Blood or protein may need confirmation with microscopy, a laboratory test, or a repeat sample. Nitrites or white blood cell indicators can support concern about a urinary tract infection, but symptoms and examination still guide the decision.

A clinician may interpret the result alongside symptoms such as burning, urgency, fever, side pain, swelling or changes in urine volume. A kidney infection can need different attention from a bladder infection, while urinary symptoms in some men may relate to benign prostatic hyperplasia.

What to do after testing

Follow the collection instructions and tell the clinician about medicines, supplements, recent exercise, menstruation and known kidney or metabolic conditions. Do not start or stop treatment from a dipstick result alone. If infection is suspected, a urine culture may be requested before or alongside antibiotic treatment.

Keep a note of symptoms and when they began. Ask whether the sample should be repeated, whether a laboratory urine test is needed, and how the result changes your care plan.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical care for fever with pain in the back or side, vomiting, confusion, marked weakness, or difficulty passing urine. Visible blood, new swelling, or a major change in urine output also warrants clinical assessment. These warning signs can reflect a problem needing more than a quick screening test.

Questions for your doctor

Which dipstick markers were abnormal, and could anything have affected the sample? Do I need microscopy, culture, blood tests or a repeat urine test? What symptoms should make me seek help sooner?
