What should you know about a urine concentration test?

The test may be reported as urine specific gravity or urine osmolality. Concentrated urine can occur when you have taken in less fluid or lost fluid through sweating, vomiting, or diarrhoea. Very dilute urine can follow high fluid intake and may also prompt assessment of the kidneys, hormones, or medicines. One result does not identify a condition by itself; your symptoms, blood tests, other urine findings, and fluid intake provide context.

Follow the collection instructions from the clinic. Depending on the reason for testing, you may provide a single sample or collect urine over a set period.
