Slightly cloudy urine: possible causes

A small amount of cloudiness can follow concentrated urine, crystals, mucus, or contamination of a collection cup. It becomes more meaningful when paired with burning, needing to urinate often, urgency, an unusual smell, pelvic discomfort, or blood. Those symptoms can occur with a urinary tract infection. Fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the side or back raises concern for a kidney infection. The visual change alone cannot tell which explanation applies.

Drink fluids normally if you have not been told to restrict them, and see whether the appearance clears during the day. Avoid judging a sample from a dirty container or toilet water. Record when the change began and any pain, fever, smell, or change in urinary frequency. If it persists or returns, arrange a urine test rather than treating yourself with antibiotics.

Get medical advice for ongoing cloudiness, painful urination, blood, new urgency, or difficulty emptying the bladder. Seek urgent care if you develop fever with back or side pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, severe illness, or cannot pass urine. These signs need assessment for infection or another urinary complication.
