What should you know about urinalysis slightly cloudy?

Cloudiness can appear when urine is concentrated, when crystals or mucus are present, or when cells and bacteria enter the sample. A container that was not clean, delayed examination, or vaginal discharge can also affect appearance. Cloudiness alone cannot distinguish dehydration from infection or another urinary problem. Burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, blood, fever, or side pain make the rest of the urinalysis and clinical assessment more relevant. The laboratory may examine white cells, red cells, bacteria, and chemical markers to clarify the finding.

Drink your usual fluids unless a clinician has advised restriction, and follow instructions if a repeat clean-catch sample is requested. Tell the clinician about urinary symptoms, pregnancy, recent antibiotics, new medicines, discharge, and previous infections. Do not assume cloudiness requires antibiotics, and do not use leftover treatment. If you have no symptoms and the report only notes slight cloudiness, ask whether observation or a repeat sample is appropriate.

Contact a clinician promptly for painful urination with fever, chills, side or back pain, vomiting, visible blood, or symptoms that are worsening. Pregnancy, a urinary catheter, kidney disease, or reduced immunity warrants tailored advice even when symptoms are mild. Seek emergency help for confusion, collapse, severe weakness, or difficulty breathing.
