What should you know about upper left flank pain causes?

Upper left flank pain may reflect muscle strain, a left kidney problem, or a urinary condition, with associated symptoms guiding next steps. Flank pain sits between the lower ribs and hip and may be felt toward the side or back.

Pain after lifting, sport, coughing, or a sudden twist may come from the muscles or joints of the back.
