What should you know about unusual asthma symptoms?

Asthma symptoms vary between people and may come and go. Cough can be the main feature, especially at night, after exercise, in cold air, or around dust and pollen. Chest tightness, reduced stamina, interrupted sleep, or a feeling that breathing takes extra effort may also occur. Allergic rhinitis and house dust mite allergy can trigger airway symptoms, but a cough or tight chest can have other causes. A clinician uses the pattern, examination, and breathing assessment to work out what is happening.

Arrange an assessment if symptoms recur, disturb sleep, limit activity, or follow a clear trigger. Note when symptoms begin, how long they last, possible exposures, and whether an inhaler changes them. Use asthma medicines only according to your prescribed plan; do not borrow another person’s inhaler. Reduce known triggers where practical, keep rescue medicine available if prescribed, and ask how to use an inhaler correctly. A nebuliser treatment may be considered by a clinician during a significant flare.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, difficulty speaking in full sentences, blue or grey lips, exhaustion, confusion, or symptoms that are rapidly worsening. Seek urgent assessment when a reliever is not helping as expected, breathing remains difficult after using it, or chest tightness is new and severe. Do not assume an unusual pattern is mild simply because wheezing is not present.
