What should you know about unspecified conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis can cause redness, watering, gritty discomfort, itching, swollen eyelids, or eye discharge. The cause may be viral, bacterial, allergic, or irritation from smoke, dust, cosmetics, or contact lenses. ‘Unspecified’ means the record does not identify which cause is responsible; it is not a statement that the symptoms are trivial. Viral and bacterial forms can spread through hands, towels, cosmetics, and shared surfaces. A clinician looks at the pattern, the appearance of the eye, contact-lens use, vision, and pain to decide whether further assessment or treatment is needed.

Wash hands often, avoid rubbing the eyes, use a clean separate towel, and discard eye cosmetics used during the episode. Clean crusting gently with clean water and a fresh pad for each eye. Do not share drops, and do not wear contact lenses until the eye has recovered and a clinician or product guidance says it is safe. Lubricating drops or a cool compress may ease irritation. Antibiotic treatment helps only selected bacterial infections, so use it when prescribed rather than using leftover medicine.

Seek urgent eye assessment for significant eye pain, reduced or blurred vision that does not clear with blinking, marked light sensitivity, injury, chemical exposure, or a cloudy-looking cornea. Contact-lens wearers with pain or redness should obtain prompt advice because corneal infection can progress quickly. Rapid swelling around the eye, fever, or difficulty moving the eye also needs urgent care. Worsening red eye despite self-care warrants a GP Consultation.

Ask whether the pattern suggests allergy, irritation, a virus, or bacteria; whether you should stop lenses; and how long to avoid close contact at work or school. Clarify whether antibiotic treatment is appropriate and which change in pain, vision, discharge, or light sensitivity should trigger review.
