What should you know about unknown miscarriage signs?

Some miscarriages are identified at a routine scan when development has stopped but the body has not yet started bleeding or cramping. Other pregnancies have bleeding or pain for reasons that do not lead to miscarriage. Pregnancy symptoms such as nausea or breast tenderness can also change naturally, so symptoms alone cannot confirm whether a pregnancy is continuing. Assessment may include questions about dates and symptoms, examination, pregnancy hormone testing, and a transvaginal ultrasound. A single uncertain scan may need follow-up before a diagnosis is made.

Contact your maternity or gynaecology service if you are worried, have bleeding, cramps, fluid loss, or a change in pregnancy symptoms. Keep any scan and blood-test appointments, and ask what result would confirm the diagnosis. If miscarriage is confirmed, you may be offered watchful waiting, medicines, or a procedure to remove pregnancy tissue. The choice depends on your symptoms, examination, scan findings, and preferences.

Seek emergency care for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, fainting, fever, or feeling very unwell. These symptoms can signal significant bleeding, infection, or an ectopic pregnancy and need prompt assessment. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint.
