Unilateral hydrosalpinx and natural pregnancy: what to know

Natural pregnancy can remain possible with unilateral hydrosalpinx, but the open tube and overall fertility factors need careful assessment. An egg released from an ovary is usually collected by a nearby tube, so tubal health and ovulation on both sides influence the chances of conception.

A hydrosalpinx is a fallopian tube sealed by scarring and expanded with fluid. Pelvic inflammatory disease is a possible cause, along with earlier pelvic infection, surgery or endometriosis. The unaffected tube may allow sperm and egg to meet, but this cannot be assumed from the word unilateral: its openness and function need assessment. The fluid may also flow toward the womb and interfere with implantation.
