Real-time abdominal ultrasound with image documentation

During the examination, a sonographer moves a probe across gel-covered skin while watching the internal structures on a screen. Real-time viewing can show movement, fluid, blood flow when appropriate, and how an area changes with breathing or gentle pressure. Image documentation means representative still images or recorded measurements are saved for review by the reporting clinician.

The examination may help assess the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, abdominal wall, or other requested structures. It cannot answer every abdominal question, particularly when gas or tissue depth limits the view, and a further test may be recommended.

Check the appointment instructions carefully. Depending on the requested organs, you may need to avoid food for a period or drink water beforehand. Wear practical clothing and tell the sonographer about pregnancy, recent surgery, skin problems, or tenderness that could affect positioning.

The scan itself usually involves lying still while the probe is moved over the abdomen, sometimes with brief breath-holding. The saved images are interpreted after the examination, so ask the ordering clinician when the report will be available and who will explain it.

Do not wait for a planned ultrasound if abdominal pain becomes severe or sudden, the abdomen becomes rigid or very swollen, vomiting prevents fluids, you faint, or you develop fever with severe pain, yellow skin or eyes, or blood in vomit or stool. These symptoms need clinical assessment based on the whole picture.

Clarify which organs are included, whether you need fasting or a full bladder, whether movement or pressure will be used, how images are selected for the report, and what the next step will be if the result is unclear. Ask how urgent symptoms should be handled while waiting.
