What is a limited abdominal ultrasound?

A sonographer applies gel to your skin and moves a handheld probe over the requested area. The scan creates moving images without using ionising radiation. Limited means the examination is focused rather than a full survey of every abdominal structure; the organs assessed depend on the clinical question and the request from your clinician.

The scan may help investigate gallbladder or kidney concerns, some abdominal masses, fluid, or a hernia. Ultrasound can have limits when bowel gas, body tissues, or the location of a problem makes the view difficult, so another test may sometimes be needed.

Follow the imaging centre’s instructions because preparation varies with the area being examined. You may be asked not to eat for a period beforehand or to arrive with a comfortably full bladder. Wear clothing that allows access to the abdomen, and tell staff if you are pregnant, have a wound, or find pressure painful.

Bring the referral details and relevant previous results if requested. After the scan, the images are interpreted and a report is sent to the clinician who arranged it; the sonographer may not be able to explain the final result immediately.

Seek urgent care for severe or sudden abdominal pain, a rigid or markedly swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, fainting, yellow skin or eyes with worsening illness, blood in vomit or stool, or fever with severe pain. An ultrasound appointment should not delay assessment of rapidly worsening symptoms.

Ask which organs will be assessed, whether you need to fast or fill your bladder, when and how the result will be shared, and what happens if the images do not answer the clinical question. Mention medicines, pregnancy, and previous abdominal procedures.
