The unusual mark may differ in colour, shape, border, size, or overall pattern from nearby moles. It may also be a new spot or one that changes, bleeds, crusts, itches, or becomes sore. The sign is a reason to arrange an examination, not a diagnosis by itself. A clinician may use dermoscopy and compare the lesion with the rest of your skin before deciding whether tissue testing is needed.

Take a clear photograph with a scale, record when you first noticed the difference, and check hard-to-see areas with help.
